What Are Paul’s Missing Letters?

While we have 13 letters from Paul in the New Testament, Scripture itself hints at others that have been lost to history. Two of the most well-known missing letters are:

1. The Previous Letter to the Corinthians

📖 1 Corinthians 5:9 – “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.”

This means Paul wrote a letter before 1 Corinthians, which scholars call the "Previous Letter" or "Letter A."

Though we don’t have this letter today, it seems to have included instructions about avoiding sin and staying pure.

But why didn’t this letter survive? Was it lost, or was it left out for a reason?

2. The Severe Letter to the Corinthians

📖 2 Corinthians 2:4 – “I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears.”

This refers to another lost letter, often called the "Severe Letter" or "Letter C."

It was written after 1 Corinthians but before 2 Corinthians and was likely a strong rebuke of the Corinthian church.

Many believe this letter dealt with serious issues, like challenges to Paul’s authority and moral failures within the church.

Why Are These Letters Missing?

There are several possible reasons why these letters didn’t survive or weren’t included in the Bible:

These letters may have been intended for a particular church at a specific time, rather than for all Christians.

Unlike Paul’s preserved letters, which offer timeless teachings, these may have been more situational.

2. They Weren’t Considered Scripture

Early Christians, guided by the Holy Spirit, recognized which writings were divinely inspired and useful for the entire church.

It’s possible that Paul’s missing letters were simply not intended by God to be part of the Bible.

3. They Were Lost Over Time

Ancient letters were written on fragile materials like papyrus, which deteriorated easily. If a letter wasn’t widely copied and shared, it could have been lost to history.

What If We Found One of Paul’s Missing Letters Today?

This is where things get really interesting!

Let’s say archaeologists unearthed an authentic letter from Paul—one that was verified by scholars.

Could we add it to the Bible?

To be considered Scripture, it would need to pass three major tests:

✅ Theological Consistency: Does it align with the teachings of the rest of the Bible? If it contradicted Scripture, it wouldn’t qualify.

Even if it passed all these tests, most scholars and church leaders believe the canon is already complete—meaning no new books will ever be added to the Bible.
